The 3 R's

Updated: Dec 13, 2018

My sister recently posted a photo on her Instagram regarding the importance of Recycling. Not just the fact that we should always consciously do it, but the fact that we aren't. I've pushed myself to take part in what my sister has been sharing to her followers because of what is at stake, so I urge those who are reading this to also learn the importance of the 3 R's and to check out her Instagram page for more information on how you can be part of the difference.

1. Refuse

If you don't need it, don't take it.

There are major companies out there currently banning plastic straws. And although they are making the strong effort to change human habits, it's up to the rest of us to refuse one-time use products; plastic cutlery, styrofoam plates, plastic grocery bags, even non-recyclable coffee cups. There are so many companies out there promoting reusable products to reduce the amount of waste that goes into our landfills. So why don't we benefit from it? Why use another plastic cup when you have a reusable one in your car? The mindset to use single use consumption has to change in order for us to make an impact.

2. Reduce

If you can't refuse it, try to reduce it.

Reducing yourself to one paper plate or cup at a party instead of 2-4 will go a long way. There are a billion of people thinking the same thing: It's ONE plate, it's ONE straw, it's ONE plastic cup. Imagine how many people say that on a daily? No one said it would be easy but as we all become aware of what we can reduce, the habit will continue, and less will go to waste!

3. Reuse

Find reusable products to eliminate the manufacturing process.

If you can't refuse it, and you can't reduce it, then reuse it. Thrift shopping is another way to help improve the use of products going through the manufacturing process. We all know we can't refuse or completely reduce the amount of clothes being made every single day. But a way to improve that would be to reuse it. Go thrifting! It's fun and you will be surprised what you can find!

I am going on 3 months now without using plastic bags, paper towels, and plastic cutlery, and it definitely was difficult at first to remember to reuse my own bag or to bring our bamboo cutlery whenever we went out. But it got easier because I knew that I wasn't putting anything else in our landfill. When you find products that can be used time and time again, you are completely cutting out the manufacturing process which reduces the waste and ultimately helps our planet in general.

I hope you all can learn something from what my sister and I support. It's an extreme effort but it will pay off, and we truly believe that. Again, if you have any questions or want to leave a comment, feel free to subscribe to my mailing list and say hey!
